Inspired by Japan's folklore

Haru & Yuka is particularly special to me and my family. It began with a realisation that multicultural families living away from their home countries often struggle to find stories that reflect their unique cultures. As my son is half-Celtic-British and half-Japanese, living in Australia, I wanted to create a series of books that would introduce him to the cultures of his heritage. Haru & Yuka was the first step in this journey, with the characters and their adventures coming to life so clearly in my mind.

The stories centre around Japanese culture,

with elements of mythology or tradition.

One of the main inspirations for book 1 in the series, Haru & Yuka and the Disappearing Kitsuné Guard, came from my mother-in-law, who shared with me her wish to see more stories about the good, guardian side of the kitsuné—rather than the trickster, mischievous versions often depicted. Her influence led me to feature the kitsuné in a positive, protective light, which became very fun!

As the series grows, I plan to introduce other key creatures from Japanese folklore, such as the snow-bathing monkeys (book 2, which is proving very amusing to write).

I also wanted to incorporate a piece of Japan’s regional food culture. Inspired by my husband's family, who love the diversity of local foods that each Japanese prefecture is known for, I decided to include these culinary traditions in the books. Each region has its own special dishes, and showcasing this in the stories allows young readers to explore Japan’s food culture while also discovering more about the people and places that make it so unique. Plus, I just love writing about food!

And I’d love to explore Celtic stories next! To hark back to the histories, lore, and tales that my own mother raised me with.
